One Direction didn’t just start off as a band that the whole world fell in love with. In this Academic article it talks about the start of one direction. They started in the Britain X factor and they all individually competed until they were formed into a group. As they grew they were reaching really big numbers on the charts and were compared to ‘NSync and the Backstreet Boys however although they were compared to the Beatles in terms of chart numbers, they can never beat the legends. A boyband with big numbers mean that they also have a hug following which equals a huge fandom. The article helps to understand just how big One direction was even to those who do not know about 1D, they will understand from the people that they are beating.

Although everyone knows that the 1D fandom is big, you don’t realize just how big until you pull up the statistics. According to this source, the band sold 50 million records in total worldwide as of 2017. With new music coming out, the fandom only grew. Albums such as Take Me Home (2012) sold 2,043,000 albums, Midnight Memories (2013) sold 1,552,000, Four (2014) sold 1,064,000, and Made in the A.M. (2015) sold 853,000 albums. This is important because it helps built a clear image of how much support they have and how successful they were.

This entertainment world is corrupt and has so many fake people that no one can tell who’s real and who’s fake. When their movie, One direction: This Is Us, came out the fandom grew even bigger. They saw a side of the boys that they never do where it was all the behind the scenes of their lives and how they spend it. The movie portrayed pop culture and the career of the boyband by filming a portion of their concerts in front of 65,000 people, live footage of their tours, and the boyband talking about everything that has changed. But the movie also showed the fans, the members normality as teenage boys like roaming hotels and getting pushed around in shopping carts. The relationship between the band members are genuine and they have a strong bond. This can be used in my paper as to why they have so many people in love with them, they genuinely care about each other and the fans.
